Bryan Washington

3.8 AVERAGE

In his stripped-down prose Washington navigates the complexities of race, queerness, class- largely poverty- and ultimately one’s identity through the careful attention he gives to the city of Houston. Though technically adept this is clearly Washington’s debut, some rhetorical devices fall flat and the sparse prose at times undermines the emotional weight of the stories.

4.5⭐

Might come back and give it five stars later, I'm not sure.

Incredibly powerful read and very deep without being heavy. Also really beautiful. Oh and real, so real from a perspective people (it's me, I'm people) often don't think about because things are so easy and comfortable in our privileges

Blunt storytelling that’s similar in tone to much of Memorial, which is to say  ultimately it fell flat for me, and part of that is to blame on such a monotone audiobook reading from Washington. I just think I’m not the core audience for these stories. Although, I can appreciate the connections and community building from his writing.
