I continue to be enthralled by Washington’s writing style and loved the way this was set up (short stories/sort of ensemble-y, but also with a main character). It was also crushing with very little light at the end of the tunnel.

While I thought this was a great debut and I didn't dislike it, you can feel the inspiration of Junot Diaz in every story to the point that it felt a little like imitation. I'm a huge fan of Diaz and I found Lot to be underwhelming in comparison.

I liked this by the end, though it took me about half the book to connect with it — really want to check out Memorial after this

Some of these stories didn’t hold me as much as Memorial or Family Meal

This collection of short stories was moving, thought provoking and clever, but with various short stories, I found it hard to get invested. Maybe the short story format isn’t for me, but I plan to keep reading more from Bryan Washington.

Love the voice, love the stories, love the hyper-specific Houston locations. There are not many authors I'd expect to name drop Disco Kroger. I look forward to reading more Bryan Washington.
