I listened to the audiobook and thought this was cute. I probably will try the next in the series as well.

— must a book be good?
is it not enough for me to imagine the mc’s brother as carlos sainz the entire time?

for real though, i’m 97% sure lauren asher saw one (1) episode of the 2018 ‘drive to survive’ season and then proceeded to write this… and honestly good for her!
i have to say though… those two had nothing in common and i was having way more fun about maya’s interactions with her brother than about them so uh, yeah, i wasn’t necessarily rooting for them.
minus half a star because they got together after the singapore grand prix after i literally cried about the tickets i wanted to buy for said event being sold out this morning lol

update for 28/7: i bumped to 3.25 because i did end up getting the tickets i wanted for the race so i’m not as bitter towards maya and noah anymore

this was a cute read. the pacing was good, the main characters personal development and chemistry between them was very prominent and cute and the fact that it’s a series w characters we’ve met and will meet again is smth i adore in books so i have to give it to lauren for doing a good job w her debut book and for building this world.

however overall it just wasn’t engaging. i don’t have any strong opinions about it, didn’t hate it nor love it. this is defo a good read if ur looking for a mindless, cute and spicy book to pass some time.

“it’s pretty insane. can you imagine that kind of love? i can because i experience it. the story doesn’t end with a happily-ever-after because it starts with it. because they have the rest of their lives to finish their story.”

ooh bitch i love this series already, im so excited to read onwards and upwards. lauren asher you are a STAR!

This was fun! The lower rating comes from two pitfalls I think could have been fixed with better editing.

1) This book was very obviously written by an American. This came through in small ways, like the dates being in the wrong format for a Spanish protagonist and Maya referring to university as college and talking about being a sophomore, junior etc, and big ways, like how she is from a place in Catalonia, but her being Catalan never comes up, she only ever refers to herself as Spanish. Of course you can be both, I just find it odd that it was never mentioned.

2) there were moments off screen that could have had a really emotional punch for readers that we didn’t get to see, OR there were parts that could have had more tension but it was immediately resolved. For example, it would have been great to read about when Maya realised Noah slept with another woman after their date, and how that made her feel. But alas, it happened off screen so we didn’t get to really feel her emotions. Another example was when Noah had his big crash. Despite the danger of this sport, everything always seemed so low-risk because it never felt like our characters were in genuine danger.

I also just wish that the reveal to Santi about Maya and Noah’s relationship was better. Throughout the novel, we were made to believe that it would be catastrophic when Santi found out about them, but really it was just... meh? It was resolved SO quickly when it had the potential to be the classic final romance stumble arc we all know and love as a convention of the genre.

It’s really interesting having read this book, the authors debut, after having read her most recent book first, The Fine Print. I can clearly see that she’s grown A LOT as an author between then and now, especially in the way she presents female dynamics (internalised misogyny was definitely present in Maya) and in her overall writing style.

this was awful. only giving it two because one feels nasty. so boring, so cliche (& not in a cute familiar way). really forced myself to read past 20% but determined to get some more books done lmao
