The only real problem occurs during the latter half of the book. The psychology seems to dwindle only to be replaced with more references to the character's (admittedly by this point, rather convoluted) history. That said, as a fan, it was still pretty entertaining.

I was really excited to read this initially, but I’m very disappointed.
It felt like a 11th grader wrote a thesis on Batman and compared it to their Psych101/foundations terminology.
I also think the language in the middle was fairly closed-minded & assuming then “most men” and “most women” are [like this/that]. I mean??? This author did not feel like an expert in psychology in the slightest and it pissed me off.
Some of the closing statements made sense about how some disorderly behavior isn’t exactly defining, I agree. Not everything warrants a diagnosis. HOWEVER, I felt frustrated reading it. And it insinuate that the Red Hood was “more insane” than the Joker?? And that the Joker “was more of a Bipolar Disorder diagnosis vs an actually calculating psychopath?”
Nahhhhh. Get out of here.
Anyway I’m gonna rewatch Nolan’s trilogy and Pattinson’s movies again because they’re awesome depictions of the actual comic.

This book had flashes of brilliance but it suffered from a lack of focus and direction. I wanted to enjoy it but the author attempted to cover too much in each chapter and the book as a whole and therefore didn't end up keeping my attention.
Could be good but needs to be reworked to maintain a clearer through line.

This is my first pop culture/academic mash-up read, and I have to say I am pretty into it. I have a mild interest in Psychology, and an intense interest in all things superheroes so I figured why not give this book a whirl. It was interesting to peel apart the various characters of the Batman series, and see how and why they act and react the way they do. Though I knew from reading the comics and seeing all the different incarnations of the characters via movies and cartoons that a lot of the characters had traits related to many mental diseases. Even Batman himself is taken apart and examined, and we look at his traumatic childhood event and see how it molds him as a man and his response to the villains and life around him.
I wish that when I took my Film classes and a few Psych classes in college that they would have made us read this or even something similar as I feel it would have definitely lead to a lively discussion and would have caught the interest of most if not all the students. I do look forward to reading more books like this.

Great book. Lays out what each mental issue each of Batman's foes have and connects it to reality. Even Batman himself is given a psychological critique. Puts a interesting perspective on the DC world.
