This was a smooth and really refreshing read that honestly took me by surprise. I bought it because of the gorgeous cover art and all the people praising it so i did have some relatively high expectations. Fortunately, i can say they were met.
One of this novel’s strengths is the way it characterizes its characters in order to build intrigue, making you want to know more about them and understand them better. It does this by not directly telling you everything but rather “showing” you who they are from the way they interact with other characters or the environment.
Another thing i really enjoyed was the relationship development that came at just the right pace, at least in my opinion. Even though there were a lot of coincidences in the beginning, the pace still seemed natural. However in this volume the romance didn’t seem like the main focus, it being rather being Jiang Cheng’s emotional journey while dealing with some difficult and abrupt changes.
Even though overall it was a good read, there are still some things that bothered me, though they are minor.
The first one being with the translation, more specifically the direct translation of chinese phrases/ slang that weren’t adapted to english while also not providing footnotes. The other one is just the way sometimes the scene would change really abruptly, though this one might as well be me being too picky.
Overall this was a very good read and i will definitely be continuing this series

i am so so biased with this author but i think this is one of the greatest high school novel i’ve ever read. i am not a fan of school/university setting, since few ones i’ve read are boring but this is the second time i’ve read it and still as excited as the first. jiang cheng, at least you’ll be happy in this universe
