I read The Bone Season last summer for the first time ever and was immediately enthralled by the language, the story, and the characters. I waited until all the books were released with the author’s preferred text so that I could binge them, but as the months passed I wondered - was this book really as good as I initially thought?

The answer is yes - in fact, it’s even better on the second (and third) read. Diving into the world with the prequel is not necessary but highly recommended. It gave me insight into several important characters and really helped me understand some of the relationships. Each of the main books moves quickly, so it’s nice to have the interludes in the form of novellas to break up the action and provide a deeper understanding of the main characters.

While these books work perfectly together as a series, I really appreciated how distinctively different each novel is. The settings are the most obvious difference, but the character development and overall tone is so specific to each book. This captivated me as a reader and also helped me differentiate between each part of the overall arc and keep everything aligned in my brain (what can I say, I get confused easily).

This series will eventually be seven books, but the author has currently written four books, two novellas, and a companion text, with the fifth book coming out in 2025. Even though the series isn’t complete, I feel strongly that this is the best contemporary series I have ever read (yep, I think it’s better than Throne of Glass). I don’t know what I love more - the characters, the storyline, or the absolutely beautiful and impactful language that the author employs. I will be telling everyone I know to read this series!

I REALLY wanted to give this five stars, but there were SOO many typos and bad editing issues that it was distracting.
