4.0/5⭐️. Weirdly happy ending for how 95% of the story unfolded. Basically just a western, magical series of unfortunate events when you think about it.

I liked this book. The only complaint I have is that it got weirdly repetitive after the first two stops on the road. I loved the characters. Honestly that’s where the book really shines. I would definitely recommend.

(libby audiobook, i think i saw it recommended on the BooksThatFeelLikeThis subreddit)

this was a wild ride. the atmosphere is Great, the characters are complicated and have amazing interwoven relationships, and there’s always something just around the corner. the audiobook especially is great and gives everyone super distinct voices. the ending is satisfying, the action is engaging, and the horror aspects are unique and unsettling. because the cast of characters is so far reaching you get so many great western tropes (cowboy partners, an outlaw, a farm widow, etc) but the author manages to pull them off in ways that give them a lot of introspection and new life. love love loved this.

the only ding i have is that there is a Lot going on in this book, to the point that i think i lost who/where/what was happening a few times. there are lots of names to keep track of and i found myself mixing up locations as well. this could 100% be just a me thing but something to keep in mind if you multitask while reading. definitely makes me want to see what more i could pick up on a reread in the future
