I loved every moment of this book! The characters were written well and they along with the setting felt very believable and real. It was dark and yet had a very authentic and somewhat sweet feeling. Very enjoyable from beginning to end!

Abominable Book Club February 2025, Pick #1

Not for me, unfortunately. Not the worst thing ever but after 100 pages I just didn't feel compelled to pick it up any more.

When Western meets Horror, something unique and amazing is created. This book had it all, from burping up toads, cannibals, cowboys, witchcraft, ghosts and more. It ended beautifully.

Something about this book kept taking me out of it. I think it was two related things:
1. Events happen to people in a very coincidental way. People will meet who they need to meet with very little effort. For example, there’s one point where a minor character travels across several states and when they stop, in the first conversation they have, a stranger says to him ā€œhey did you hear what happened over there?ā€ And of course, he’s referring to this character’s backstory. It’s way too convenient. America is huge, but this book’s version of the Wild West feels smaller Red Dead Redemption’s first map.
2. Characters talk and act like modern people playing cowboy. There’s a lot of ā€œā€˜ma’amā€s thrown around but sometimes the language will switch to something modern like ā€œthat’s a bit muchā€ and I couldn’t help but roll me eyes.

I did like the book, there were just some things I couldn’t help but notice. If you think you’ll like it, you probably will.
