This was an exciting and spooky journey following the rag tag group across the old west to kill a witch. It seamlessly mixes all sorts of from cursed woods and demons to cannibals and ancient shapeshifters to just plain evil men. It's exciting to watch the group conquer each trial as they come across it, even if sometimes the group comes out the worse for wear on the other side. The twist at the end makes me excited for the upcoming sequel and where it goes from there.

I saw this categorized as horror, though despite having characters typical to horror, it is decidedly NOT. It's a western romp; alternately tales of love and revenge. It's a small posse for various reasons heading North to meet a witch, Sadie Grace. It's the towns they travel through and the characters they meet along the way. It's people's motivations for revenge or for travel at all. It's about change, really.

52 Book Club 2025 #12. Has a moon on the cover ; I’m very picky with giving a book 5 stars but this story hit every single check box I love: a solid adventure, a ragtag group of mature yet silly characters, a fun story, good fights, splatterpunk shenanigans, and a bittersweet ending. If you liked Slewfoot you’d love this book.
