such an interesting premise but i guess i’m not the target audience because i did not like the execution. the very large cast and constant switching of povs made the story difficult to follow and characters hard to get attached to. i thought it would be a found family situation but they had very little synergy nor any character development. i really had to force myself through the second half of the book. as another reviewer said, there was both too much and not enough going on.

This was good! This was giving Firefly vibes and you gotta trust the process on that but I swear it's there. Also, if you enjoyed Between Two Fires you would likely enjoy this (and vice versa). I actually liked this better than BTF, I liked the characters more. I thought they were strong, well fleshed out, and interesting. Loved the changes in perspective, the additional and numerous POVs helped expand the world and really brought all the storylines together in the end. The story itself was excellent, as well, there was a bit of mystery (which I am ashamed to say I did not solve before the reveal šŸ˜”šŸ˜”šŸ˜”), a fair amount of horror elements, and camaraderie-centric adventures. The ending made me sad and emotional.

EDIT: actually.... sitting with this a minute i had to come back and take away stars for the ICWA hate crime that was committed at the end of this, as well as just the general portrayal (limited tho it was) of Native characters in this one.
Sure yeah this was horror, but I don't think it was QUITE necessary for the only Native character in this to be murdered, eaten, and then his body shat out over a large area, thus allowing him as a ghost to not be stuck in one location. Also notable that his was the only character that was given such a colorful body disposal.

It didn't grab me. The writing was kinda boring.
