Harris and Me is a story of a boy who goes to a farm to live with family over one summer. He doesn't really know them at all or the first thing about living on a farm, but he learns. Along the way he has a lot of adventures with his cousin, Harris, and they get into all sorts of trouble.
I read this book in one day. I thought it was really funny and love the way Paulsen writes. I seem to always be able to find myself in his stories.
Due to the sporadic cursing and some questionable content, I'm not sure that I would use this book in my classroom unless it was going to be a read aloud where I could omit certain words and content.

This is a children’s book that is set in the early 1950s. It is written from the perspective of a young boy. One day he is taken from his parents (who drink a little too much at times) and brought to live with some of his distant relatives on a farm. This is the story about his friendship with his second cousin, Harris, and the adventures and escapades that they get up to on the farm.

Cute country-life book. Brought back some memories of Grandma and Grandpa's farm.

This came up in a discussion of which childhood books will stand up as an adult and I had never read this one. Gary Paulson is a good writer, but this one was a kids book for me (as it was intended) and not one I'd read without a child involved.

I'm obviously not the target audience, but this is definitely not Paulsen's best work. There were a couple funny scenes, but mostly I was bored.

I had to push to get through this one. As an adult I could appreciate the story, but I think it would feel really outdated and somewhat confusing to kids living in urban or suburban areas because they probably wouldn't have the necessary background knowledge. It also bothered me that "commie jap" was used frequently without much context.
