it was ok, in all honesty I was only reading the rest so I wouldn’t have to put it on hold again. The main character frustrated me a lot, she kinda reminded me of the main characters that Riley Sager writes (I don’t really enjoy Riley Sager’s writing). It was especially annoying when something supernatural was in the process of happening to her & she still insisted that it was a hallucination (even when it ended up hurting her & she felt the pain from the wound, she still kept saying in her head that it was a hallucination). She also mentioned her weight a lot, which was kinda triggering for me (since I have some issues with my weight & my body perception 🙃) All in all, it was an ok read, I probably wouldn’t reread it again though 🥲

“Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.”

I’ve mentioned before just how much I vibe with T. Kingfisher’s writing, and this book was no different. In fact, this may be my favourite so far.

Filled with creepy haunts and loveable characters, this was a wicked good time that managed to make roses and ladybugs unsettling. Sprinkle in some generational trauma and familial wounds that were never acknowledged and you have a deep yet fun haunted house story.

If you’re looking for a short, but well written haunted house story with a creepy garden, plus sized main character, a racist ghost, some adorable vultures, and what I’m starting to consider a T. Kingfisher staple - a really cool old woman - this may be the perfect spooky read for you.

I enjoyed this book enough, but it was too superficial. It would’ve been better if it had leaned into the grandmother’s backstory instead of explaining her personality in a couple of sentences. It would’ve given the book more depth and rationale as to her internal motives. Instead, the focus was on the mother, who was a plot device at best. Also, the conflict and denouement were anticlimactic in comparison to the buildup to the story climax. Felt like a good first effort, except the author is prolific and has been published since 2009.

A great introduction to Kingfisher’s books. Funny, spooky, creative and a likeable main character (although her denial and stubbornness does get a little bit frustrating sometimes). It’s pretty slow paced but when stuff starts happening, it starts happening BIG TIME.

A pretty enjoyable read. Not so scary, in my opinion, and the plot does take you to an unexpected place. The characters are lovely, though, and I really enjoy the MC’s narration style.
