This book is absolutely amazing, and the cliffhanger killed me. I HATE having to wait for more Fever books! I always end up forgetting what happened in the last one by the time I get my hands on the new one.

Oh wow!!

This was pretty phenomenal!

Jada and Shazam tore at my heart deeply.
And such great twists and turns!

I'm already starting the sequel. Can't get enough!

Eagerly anticipating another Fever book, I read it as fast as my busy life would allow. Of course, it left me wanting more. Not just at the end of the book. I wanted more in this story. More Ryodan, more Dani/Jada, more of the Nine.... Much was left unexplained, but I'm sure it will be answered in the next book, or the next.

This review contains minor spoilers.

Feverborn picks up where Burned left off and is another solid installment of entertaining story telling. It’s not epic, none of the last 3 books seem to have reached the pinnacle of the first 5 – but in comparison to other offerings in the same genre – it’s still really good.

The black holes which have sprung up on the sites previously iced by the Hoar Frost King are getting bigger. Soon they’ll destroy the fabric of earth and the Fae realm which has been tied to it. Desperation makes for strange bedfellows….well…..questionable bedfellows. Which is how Ryoden, Jada, Dancer, Mac, and Barrons end up working together again to save the world; with Christian along for the ride since discovering that the "dearly beloved" Ryoden sent him home with was not in fact his uncle’s remains. Both Mac and Dani/Jada have to lay low since the Dublin Daily outed them as being tools of the Sinsar Dubh -or more specifically they outed Mac and pulled a Fake News on Dani/Jada.

As usual – it’s always an interesting time in the Fever world. Mac’s dead sister is running around Dublin looking disheveled and confused. A monstrosity known as the Sweeper is hunting for “broken things” to “fix”. (The Unseelie King was VERY clear with Mac NOT to talk to it or it’s minions). Cruce is plotting away with Papa Roach to escape his prison and take over as the new Seelie/Unseelie ruler. And who knows what Ryoden is up to with Uncle Dageus in the dungeon.

Random character thoughts:
Shazam – My favorite character – the “mopey wizard/koala bear/cat manic-depressive binge-eater. The fact that Jada loves Shazam warms me up to Jada. It must be the animal lover in me – I want my own Shazam. I think Hunters are my second favorite characters. Obviously, I’m an animal lover above all else.

Mac – I like that she isn’t as passive as she was in Burned; although I suppose I really can’t blame her for being concerned that she’s the repository for the ultimate evil and could possibly complicate things even further by letting it’s psychopathic, homicidal tendencies loose to run amok.

Dani/Jada – Dani aggravated me with her immaturity. Jada in her one-dimensional-ness seems equally immature but in a different way. However, towards the end as D/J spends more time in the world and more time around people who are significant to her – the integration of the two pieces of her personality start to form a more likable whole. Plus, she loves Shazam.
Barrons – I think he is the perfect alpha hero. He’s figured out the balance between being protective (getting Mac’s spear back) and respecting her as an equal by allowing her to make her own decisions while having her back. Funny how “Try to stay alive, Ms. Lane” actually ends up sounding sexy. Damn shame everything is “fade to black”.

Ryoden – still Meh. Bossy little bugger. He has not figured out the perfect balance.

karen marie moning.... you never dissapoint.

A good penultimate book in the Fever series. Took a while to get into this one but ended strong with me waiting to find out what happens after the cliffhanger ending.

one of the most dangling cliffhangers ever. my heart is shredded and my brain is trying to recover from emotional whiplash from this book. I cringe to think I have to wait yet another year for the next book...I don't think I can handle that.

Goodness!!! This series just gets better and better. That ending is a killer and I need to start the next book ASAP.

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

“What we achieve at our best moment doesn’t say much about who we are. It all boils down to what we become at our worst moment.”

[book:Feverborn|12444298] is the penultimate installment of the Fever series, but then again Moning tried ending it once before and we see how well that stuck. Finding out that [book:Feversong|12446825] was the last of the series prompted a renewed interest in finding out how it’s all going to get resolved (except, there is a tenth installment listed on Goodreads but apparently it’s not actually happening. WE’LL SEE.) Iced was a complete disaster, Burned was mildly better, but [book:Feverborn|12444298] actually started feeling like the series I’d always loved again.

Mac continues to be unsure of herself in regards to the Sinsar-Dubh, not able to tell whether or not she’s living a complete illusion created by the evil book. The entire city is at risk from Black Holes that consume anything and everything which the Hoar Frost King left behind from the absence of his power. And underneath the Abbey, Cruce is slowly trying to figure out a way to escape his prison and rule all Fae. In the opening pages, Mac is still invisible and I did an eye roll and reconsidered my decision to pick this up. If you remember, she was invisible the majority of Burned which got real fucking old, real fast. But craziness ensues and she finds herself fully visible once again for unknown reasons and while I would normally question the whys and such, I was just so damn pleased she was visible again so she could hopefully get back to business. And that she did.

The points of view alternated between Mac, Ryodan, Jada, Cruce, and Lor, which the latter felt completely out of place and unnecessary but I admit he did add some mild (yet highly sexualized) sense of humor to this dark tale. And of course Mac and Barrons continue to be mad for each other.

‘Every cell in my body comes to hard, frantic, sexual life when he’s near.’

There were a few serious issues plot-wise that really detracted from the more positive aspects of this installment. First, the scenes from the past between the Unseelie King and Seelie Queen that were supposed to hint at what’s been happening all along but just confused things even more. Second, which is a major spoiler
Spoilerumm… so Alina’s alive again? After being dead for the entire series and being the catalyst for everything that Mac has done and become. Yeah, sure, let’s resurrect her and overcomplicate things.
And lastly, that ending was just weird and random.
SpoilerSome random walking trash heap kidnaps her… I’m really hoping this ends up tying in with another character that has already been introduced because just having it be some random walking trash heap that has been stalking her is just too out of left field for me.
And of course, another cliffhanger! BECAUSE WHY NOT. I can’t say I’m excited for the final installment, but I’m definitely curious to see how this unintentional extension of this series ends up playing out.
