Second Read-through: March 2018
I feel pretty much the same as I did the first time I read this graphic novel, but I do think I better understand why I can't give it a full five stars now. The story falls a bit flat for me and I don't feel like there's much character development. The plot just doesn't feel fleshed out enough. That could just be because it's a graphic novel though, or maybe because I read the majority of it in one sitting?

I do really enjoy the artwork however. Especially the way the ghosts are depicted. I've come to really appreciate Raina's style.

First Read-through: September 2016
Another beautiful, charming graphic novel from the lovely Raina Telgemeier!

I enjoyed this one almost as much as her previous ones, but I think the added magical realism and the fact I couldn't really relate to it at all stopped me from 100% loving it. Don't get me wrong- it was a fun and heartwarming reading experience! Raina's artwork and writing are just as great as they've always been and it was interesting to read about a culture I'm not overly familiar with. I just couldn't connect to this one as much as I could with Smile or Drama. And that's fine! I guess I just enjoy Raina's realistic, memoir-type graphic novels a bit more?

Either way, I honestly have nothing but praise for this book and I would recommend that everyone give it a read, especially if you're already a fan of Raina. I will definitely be buying and reading everything she puts out in the future, no matter the genre and subject matter. She's just that good. ;)

This is a really adorable book that explores death in a child friendly way while showing Mexican culture.
