I really enjoyed this debut novel! Though the setting and topic of this work represent a dark and horrific time in US history, the author tells a beautiful story of adventure, love, and hope. The story was enriched by building narrative through different perspectives of children. I was moved by the character development in this book, especially in consideration to supporting characters like Billy. Throughout this novel, I experienced heartache and joy alongside one another in the imaginative world of Freewater.

Freewater is such a fantastic read. I listened to the audiobook in one day and immediately met Amina Luqman-Dawson, who is a terrific speaker. Learning about the facts, the fiction, and all the research and work behind the creation of Freewater was extremely intriguing and added so much more to what I read. Some people consider the book's overall vibe very intense; while sometimes it is, there is more of a strong sense of urgency. This is excellent writing because it makes the reader understand the circumstances the main characters are experiencing. I wish I had books such as this one when I was younger. I definitely recommend it to everyone!

Stunning debut novel and well-deserving of it's shiny new medals. I loved this imagining of what it might have been like for the enslaved people who found their freedom in the swamps. It was brilliant to have the horrors of slavery shown while the characters are in a place of safety; in a book for children, the torture came through clearly, but wasn't overwhelming.

Set in the South in the enslavement era, and tells the story of enslaved people who found freedom in the swamps.  This was a read aloud for me and my Fifth grader.  We both loved it.

Obviously every award winning book won the award for a reason, but Freewater TRULY deserved the Newbery AND the Coretta Scott King.

This Newbery award-winning book is a tough read but necessary for our middle grade and young adults to read.
