Fun, episodic superhero stuff. Not as solid as I was hoping it would be but I’ll take it.

At first it looked really cheesy and stupid. But when I realized that that was the intention for the sake of comedy, it made it a more enjoyable read.

It feels good to be able to review a CLAMP title, especially one I've never read before, and especially one connected to the fun little universe surrounding the "CLAMP school." I've never had a chance to read CLAMP School Defenders Duklyon before, but when the first volume came up in my personal recommendations on Thriftbooks, I knew I was going to have to pick it up and give it a shot, especially after how much I had enjoyed the CLAMP School Detectives and Man of Many Faces.

From point one, this title makes it pretty clear it doesn't take itself too seriously. It's meant to be a fun, playful little installment in the CLAMP School universe, with the main characters of Kentaro and Takeshi donning costumes that pay homage to the super sentai genre, in order to take directions from a very familiar "general" to combat the plots of the Imonoyama Shopping District Association...most of which are rather corny and half-baked to begin with. I'd place the genre for this as pure comedy with teases of action and romantic drama.

This isn't, however, a title I would recommend to newbie manga readers, much less newbie CLAMP readers. It's meant to be consumed in conjunction with the other CLAMP School titles, such as the aforementioned CLAMP School Detectives, Man of Many Faces and the light novels for CLAMP School Paranormal Investigators. There are recurring characters in each of the titles, with multiple inside references and jokes that are better understood when reading for this side universe as a whole. That being said, if you have read any of the previous titles for this universe, definitely give Duklyon a shot, it's just pure fun, and remember not to take it too seriously.

Apparently gave this book a 5 star in 2017. 2nd read in 2023 is more like a 2, for effort, for the puns on the mean guys, and I still think that's a lot. There's way too much text. And a crossover with the Thief with 100 masks at the end ~ does that mean the characters are so irrelevant they can't have a full volume to themselves ? Mostly, the text is killing me. Way, way too much there, in a very outdated way of translating. I was so bored.
