First of her books I read and I love, love, love them!! I'm a huge fan of Grey's Anantomy too, so this falls right into that category for me.
This is my first Tess Gerritsen novel, and I have to say this was not what i expected. I gave it four stars, because it reminded me of a made-for-TV movie, the plot line i feel like has been a bit overdone, but maybe that is just me being cynical. The beginning started out slow, and I was very confused why they kept switching from Abby's POV to the little Russian boy, Yakov's. It was cleared up at the end however, and got faster as i got through the book. I liked it a lot, though i do want to read more of her books.
At the cross streets of capitalism and organ transplantation.
Dr. Abby DiMatteo, a surgery resident that seems to have it all, brilliant career prospects and a man she loves and trusts. She has everything to look forward to, that is until she takes an opportunity to make sure a dying young man receives a heart that was about to be redirected to a wealthy individual further down the transplant list. Her decision saves a life, but threatens to take away everything she's worked so hard for and holds dear.
I'm not typically not a big fan of thrillers, but this was well written and quite interesting. A fast paced page-turner that lends medical authenticity. The characters were fairly well developed and we were met constantly with conflicting emotions and believably human responses to difficult situations. I personally like the first two-thirds better than the later portion, I think it was the growing scope of the corruption that turned me off; I tend to be more inclined to enjoy a story when it remains more intimate. Sometimes the larger the issue becomes the more in danger it is of coming off as hokie. There were also sections that parallel the timeline of the primary plot, but centered around a young orphan from eastern Europe. These sections were weaker, seemingly not buoyed by the knowledge that lifts the medical-centric portions.
All-in-all I was pleasantly surprised and found myself needing to find out what the next chapter would bring and then the next and the next.

This book turned out to be a pleasant surprise. I'd never taken an interest in medical crime before, so it was a bit of a spontaneous choice for me. The first third of the book starts off pretty slow - I began to think whether or not it would be a crime book whatsoever - but it was vital to understand how the Bayside hospital operated daily. The final two thirds more than made up for it! The suspense was thick and exciting, and the two parallel storylines kept it fresh. The only downside was how abrupt it ended. I'd hoped that more of my questions got answered, as a lot was left unexplained. Regardless, it was a very enjoyable book!

From the start I found this story absolutely riveting. It's a fast-paced medical thriller. I could not put it down.
It's so fascinating that the author is a former internist. She has so much hands-on knowledge, this understanding gives this smart novel another level of intrigue.
Note to friends: there's some explicit language and grizzly themes
