a fascinating story of how schizophrenia can affect people differently and the people around them - it was also interesting to see the history of schizophrenia research and the age old question of nature vs nurture.

Hidden Valley Road by Robert Kolker is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early March.

Chapters are introspectively written around each family member of the Galvin family with two parents and twelve children, who take on cultured, disciplined, and huge amount of high-class hobbies, while also engaging acts of bullying, rebellion, and abuse, as well as periods of haven and intense hardship, where the realization and experiences of youth bop between criminal, psychological, and schizophrenic tendencies, denial, and repression. Some chapters also reference early psychiatric studies where much of a person’s maladaptive behavior is turned back on their parents, the forms of treatment behind closed doors before being given oversight with mental health reform, and more recent cognitive psychology research within genetics at a familial level.

informative

Absolutely fascinating tale of a family dealing with multiple cases of schizophrenia that show in different ways. Really great telling of how science discovered more and more about the illness, the symptoms, causes, and medication. Wonderful depiction of mental illness and how important it is to de-stigmatize it.

2022.03.18. This book still resonates…and I will always recommend it. I’m about to loan my copy again because mental health is not about curing, but we can be hopeful that caregivers strive for compassion.
