3.5. This book does a really good job of using the Galvin family’s story to illustrate what a struggle it is to deal with schizophrenia while shedding light on the science (art?) of treatment and lack thereof over the decades. I had a bit of a tough time following the science, but I think the author did the best he could to make the info accessible for a general audience. The whole thing is insightful and heartbreaking in more ways than one. Here’s hoping for more breakthroughs in prevention since they can’t seem to figure out how to treat it well.

I found this book very interesting, but I kept picking up other things. It took me a long time to finish, partially because the content was heavy, and partially because the writing was dense. I think this family's story was one that needed to be told, and I loved learning about this perspective of mental illness and some of the science and progress we are making in understanding and appropriately helping people manage their symptoms to help them live a fulfilling life.
Graphic: Pedophilia, Sexual assault, Suicide
Moderate: Death, Mental illness, Forced institutionalization, Medical trauma

This book provided such a real and inquisitive insight to a family where the majority of the individuals struggled with schizophrenia and other psychotic based disorders. As someone who’s worked closely with individuals with schizophrenia and psychosis the open ended questions and conversations were incredibly thought provoking with the research to back it up.
