“But there is another model for progress—the opposite of the polio model—one in which solutions are not the same as breakthroughs. Progress comes gradually, often painfully, in fits and starts, and only after many people spend their entire careers failing and quarreling and, finally, reconciling. Sooner or later, some ideas fall away as others take hold. And, perhaps only in hindsight, we can see how far we’ve come, and decide on a path forward.”

beautifully written, respectful, makes an effort to tell the story just as it was in real life. it was a fantastic read to learn more about the history of mental health and how, despite a families hardships, they were able to contribute to so much research and ultimately make life better for all. highly recommended.

I was impressed by the author's ability to both share the family's history as they told it and gently pushback on some of the inaccuracies

Absolutely fascinating. I couldn’t stop listening.

I powered through this during a move and it honestly flew by. There were a few times I was confused on timelines, listening on audio means I don’t see the year written down and I wasn’t always sure if we had jumped forward or backward.

It’s a heartbreaking story, and I give major credit to Mary/Lindsay and Margaret for their strength in coming forward in their trauma, but also to share their story about their family. 6 of their 10 brothers developed schizophrenia and it tore their family apart.

I learned a lot about mental illness and schizophrenia. I think Kolker did a fantastic job of weaving between the story of the Galvin family, the history of schizophrenia, treatments, and the search for a cure.

I also did some follow up research and am really saddened to learn that Matthew is the only living Galvin brother with schizophrenia who remains.

Very well-researched exploration of schizophrenic science as seen through the lens of a family strongly impacted. Genetics and pharmacology explored alongside the family history and narrative. I have no desire to see the movie because movies focus on the drama abd this book was half science half drama- excellent balance.

Totally in awe of the research that went into this family saga. I don’t know when (if ever) I’ve been so immersed in a nonfiction text. 5 big ol’ stars and 2 thumbs up!
