No one does world building like Meljean Brook, it's complicated, complex and above all addictive. I forgot about the sheer depth of this new world history and feel like I should have re-read the Iron Duke just before this to refresh my memory.

Yasmeen is a beautifully strong heroine, she's an inspiration to read and I was so ridiculously happy to see this characterisation stay steady throughout the book. Her perfect pairing of Archimedes Fox only adds to the enjoyment of the novel as they swashbuckle their way around the world.

What I really enjoyed about this book was that there were no misconceptions. He told her what she wanted she told him what she wanted. There was no need to create silly conflict. the love that they had for each other. falling in love for each other was the conflict. I don't know how many times I've read a book screaming "just tell him" "ask her" that would solve everything! It was a nice change.

Abandoned. Steampunk, zombie, somewhat-post-apocalyptic romance . . . it should have pushed all my buttons. Can't explain why it didn't work for me.

While this one didn't grab me from the get-go like [b:The Iron Duke|7864587|The Iron Duke (Iron Seas, #1)|Meljean Brook|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1312522759s/7864587.jpg|11022865] did, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

Lots of emotional stuff, along with the action-packed adventure Archimedes is known for. Yasmeen is fleshed out in this book, and wow . . . what a great lead female character she is.

I'd love to read more about Archimedes' sister Zenobia. I really hope she ends up with a book before this series wraps up.

While I felt the ending of the story went by very quickly and wrapped up almost too neatly, I enjoyed the rest of the novel immensely. Full of action, romance, and wit, the characters were entertaining and the world still just as wonderful as in the first book.

Love Yasmeen. Love Archimedes. Love the plot. Love the world building. Hell, I even love the zombies.

This was a great book--I absolutely loved Archimedes (holy hotness) and Yasmeen (YAAAAAS GIRL) but didn't love this one as much as The Iron Duke. Everything felt a little fast, a little too easy.

Regardless, this was a really enjoyable book, and I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I liked this sequel better than the first book in the series! I love the strong female lead character who doesn't turn to a pile of helpless goo when a man is around. And a male character who is supportive, not manipulative. Great story!

This second book in the series was better than the first! I had problems with the main love interest in Iron Duke, but the one in here, Archimedes Fox, was great and went well with the kick-ass heroine. I also appreciated the background to Yasmeen and what was going on in "the other part of the world."

It's good to read a romance book where the woman isn't completely bonkers and putty and always pining after the guy. I liked the role reversal here and the fact that Yasmeen didn't really have a character change once she fell in love.

This review was originally published at Vampire Book Club.

Meljean Brook’s Heart of Steel is a straight-up adventure. Daring escapes, explosions, zombies, treasure hunting and one man’s quest to fall in love with the woman with a heart of steel.

While Heart of Steel is set in the same world as The Iron Duke, the tone is different. At times it’s rollicking, others deep, but where the first Iron Seas book brought the heat often, the second offers a slow burn. We met both Captain Corsair and Archimedes Fox in the first book. She the captain of Lady Corsair (Yasmeen), a mercenary airship, and he the hero of adventure novels. At the end of the last book, Archimedes had found himself flung overboard into a zombie-infested Paris. And Yasmeen was sad to see him go.

He wasn’t gone though. Not Archimedes Fox. Months later, he finds his way back to her determined to fall in love with her. Yasmeen’s past won’t let her open her heart, but she’s willing to take him to bed. He declines, sure he can make her long to kiss him. Instead he helps her seek vengeance and she helps him seek treasure. Both looking for purpose and a new place in the world.

Watching these two fall for each other is poetic. It’s never easy or quick. The gradual building of trust and complete acceptance resonates and makes the wait for that kiss very much worth it.

There are some nice twists and Yasmeen is ruthless. Sometimes you just need a hero who knows when to let his lady do the ass kicking. Archimedes gets this, and it’s undeniably sexy. Expect bar brawls, wild use of machetes, assassinations and the like.

Bottom line: Heart of Steel has characters worthy of adoration, a gripping adventure and a romance to cheer for.

Sexual content: Kissing, sex
