But I read for pleasure as well as education. The fascinating world behind the book trickled out in the background of a story that progressed so slowly that it was difficult to finish. What plot there is only emerges in the final few pages, meaning that the majority of the story are seemingly unconnected events with no real sense of tension or driving force. The main characters are deceptively complex, but that doesn't translate into intriguing, compelling, or fun--the book tumbles from miserable to boring situations. One of the three main storylines takes on a more varied tone, mixing in breaks for joy and even a bit of comedy; it ended up being the only reason I got through the book.
Reading The Fifth Season felt like reading a history of another world, with several individually important people and events happening in isolation, unconnected to each other and devoid of context. I would love to read the exact same story where the bizarre world was put front and centre rather than leaking out from between the lines. The Fifth Season is gorgeous, but she just isn't my type. Recommended for fans of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, literary fiction readers, and people who enjoy a subtle and thorough story.
