This is the first book I've read by this author. To be honest, I wanted to quit when I was 30% in and again at 50%. But I wanted to give it a fair shot. I'm glad I did. You see, I think I went in thinking this story was going down a path that I created and that was my fault.
This book has so many layers, it's hard to categorize it and put it in a neat box.
Bishop is a veteran wounded in combat. He decides to go to college. He seems to be searching for a similar camaraderie that he had while in the army but he's dealing with a new group of people and not all of them have good core values. He has to weed out the good from the bad, both in friendship and love.
Being older than the other fraternity pledges, Bishop becomes their mentor. He's not afraid to stand up for what he thinks is right and also shows compassion for the ones that aren't able to stand up for themselves.
Bishop also has his personal demons and, after a series of unfortunate events, he's able to finally have some clarity.
This story isn't "pretty" but it turned out to be pretty damn good.
