Boken får ett ok för att beskrivningar och språk är målande och trevligt. Men storyn saknar djup, är rörig och jag saknar en röd tråd - både i den här boken och i relation till den förra i serien.

What a cast of lovable characters doing bad things.

The sequel to my favorite book ever is solid. When I first learned that my favorite book was getting the sequel treatment my initial reaction was to ask why? It was such a long and perfect book I didn't see the need. But after reading and finishing The Mountain Shadow I understand I was wrong. There was definitely more Bombay to discover. The Mountain Shadow takes some already well established and fleshed out characters and makes them stand out more.

This book is long just like the original, but Roberts does another great job of keeping you engaged with old and new characters alike.

I have never struggled with a book so much in my life. What I thought would be like Part 1 of Shantaram was just a repeat of Part 2. This guy is trying so desprately to make Trainspotting that he moves away from a book that could be like Shadow of the Wind with Barcelona and all of Khaled Hosseini's books in Afghanistan. This could have been a love letter to India and it's people and cultures but instead it was just swear words every second sentence and so much sentence repition I wanted to throw the book. If that Dennis guy said "you're killing my high" one more time after the 6th time...and then Lin talking about beating about people but how he loved all the good and bad in his life even the men who tortured him...you aren't a saint for loving and forgiving the people who tortured you if you then go and beat up other humans for a necklace. A totally bland and hyperbolic read.

This is a gigantic sprawling mess of a book but, despite this, I really rather enjoyed it. The writing is so over the top in parts that it becomes cringe-inducing but there's no denying that the author has a genuine sublime talent for painting a picture with words. It's a testament to his ability that I liked this so much even if many parts of it caused me to roll my eyes and think "oh please, just stop".
It's a difficult task to sum up my feelings for this book in a short review - I could ramble on in this vein for quite some time - so I'll just stop now and leave it at that.
