Over six books, Karin has created such great characters that I loved and cared about. I've always picked up the next book feeling like I was revisiting old friends.
Skin Privilege (as it's known here in the UK) continues true to form. Knowing it was the last of the Grant County series had me thinking that anything could happen with these characters. Without posting any spoilers here, boy was this one a thrill-ride. We find out family secrets and get punched in the stomach a few times with reveals.
It's a great signoff that had me crying at the end.
When you do finish this book, I strongly recommend you read the acknowledgments as Karin as written a 'spoiler letter' to her fans, which if you're anything like me, will need to read after that ending.

God, Grant County was a ride.
I love Karin Slaughter. Her sharp writing, unexpected twists, and dark realism hit hard. She gives voice to women we don’t usually hear from and dives deep into how they process trauma. She shows how messy, chaotic, and self-destructive the path to recovery can be. She’s top-tier for that.
Pretty Girls and The Good Daughter are some of the best psychological thrillers I’ve read—brutal but brilliant.
But Grant County? I almost gave up like six times.
I started it because I plan to dive into the Will Trent series (which is supposed to have all the Karin Slaughter vibes), and Grant County gives backstory to some characters—Sara, most notably.
And... the first three books are rough. The crimes are so over-the-top they verge on cartoonish, and every character is unlikeable. Also... it’s a small town—how many wildly bizarre crimes can really happen in a few years?
The writing is solid, but the character development just isn’t there—at least not in the beginning.
The later books are better.
Sara doesn’t have much of an arc outside her relationship with Jeffrey.
Jeffrey definitely grows up. He becomes more grounded, less possessive, and genuinely introspective—which is rare for the stereotypical masculine “don’t-look-at-my-woman” type.
Lena... is a mess. In the beginning, she’s judgmental, bigoted, and arrogant. But she’s supposed to be.
And then... she goes through hell and handles it in the worst possible ways. She shuts everyone out. She lashes out. She makes every wrong choice.
But I feel like she had to. Because we don’t all heal the same way. Or at all. It doesn’t excuse some of her actions—but she does change. And I’m all about the character growth.
