From what I can tell this was a very divisive book of King's. Either you love it or hate it. Funnily enough I was lukewarm on it. This book was written after King was hit by a car and very badly wounded. You can tell that from a lot of the themes and some of the characters in this book that this is him processing it.

Overall the alien mystery was interesting if a little long. I enjoyed the 4 childhood friend characters but the military group that comes in in act 2 was less enjoyable to read (I understand that is partly the point but it still didn't make for a good time). The second act dragged a bit but I couldn't tell you where. It was more of a feeling that it took me a long time to read for little to happen.

I think King found the term "shit weasel" a little too enjoyable with the amount that he said it. Like it was funny the first time but after about 2 dozen the charm wears off. Not a bad book or my least favorite of his (I think that is still Revival which was just too long for the pay off) but also not one that I would recommend to a first time King reader.

My rating system
1 - Did not enjoy
2 - Not irredeemable but has too many flaws to say I enjoyed
3 - Enjoyed it
4 - Great book but didn't love it
5 - Amazing book

Definitely a favorite of mine: it combines alien invasion (a la X-Files!!!) with some truly classic King writing. And, unlike the other SF alien-centered storyline King explored in [b:The Tommyknockers|17660|The Tommyknockers|Stephen King|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1193781002s/17660.jpg|150226] this one didn't feel to me like it got bogged down in its own details. The pace was right for the story: not too fast but not too slow either.

And, the aliens' method of invasion is absolutely stellar grossout.

So I first read this book in middle school, watched the movie a few times too. I can't comment on the better of the two because I barely remember the movie, it has actually been stuck nameless in my head for the last year or more. The book is likely better however. It wasn't until I was digging in my enormous box of Stephen King goodies, for 'The Shining', that I saw the cover and it suddenly hit me that this was the one I have been wanting to see/read. I probably own the DVD too, but I didn't dig that far.

Before saying any more I'd like to state that I am laughing at the sheer amount of reviews that are focusing solely on the grotesqueness of the shit-weasels. I don't find it particularly disgusting, but to each their own. The book however is much more than that.

Even with the odd circumstances of the novel, the characters still shine through and hook you into their stories. Shit-weasels or no, Byrus or no, the main set of characters are wondrous beyond what they can imagine. Even among the alien invasion there are still places in the story that will break your heart.

A good novel to read if you have the time. Helps you review your perspective on various aspects of life.

DNF. I made it through The Tommyknockers. I'm not doing this again.

Definitely at the bottom of King’s canon.

This book has the best and the worst of King. The characterization, what makes King, King, is as crisp and fascinating as always. The relationship between the four friends with themselves and with Duddits, the insanity of Kurtz, the inner turmoil of Underhill, the development of Mr. Gray, all superbly entertaining to read.

But the story really gets away from him in the end. I feel like it went on about a hundred more pages than it needed to.

Overall, not a bad book at all, just low on the list for me when considering the entire King library.

6 gore encrusted shit weasels out of 10

This book is one of my favorite SK books. It is so well written and from beginning to end it is a page turner. The brilliance of this book is for a large portion of it every scene takes place inside three vehicles the lead vehicle is running from the two chasing and the middle is being chased by the last. The tension is so high and fast paced you want to read more and more to see how everything is going to play out.
Then there is quite possibly my most beloved character in the King multiverse Duddits his real name is Douglas Carvell he has a gift they call seeing the line, it is a lot like shining another power of the SK multiverse. Duddits is such a lovable character, he is to me one of King's best just like John Coffey and Tom Cullen. M O O N that spells Duddits!
This book does have ties to other books in the world of SK like most of his work it is all woven together. This mentions events that happened in IT, the four friends and Duddits live in Derry. The gift the boys have thanks to Duddits is very shining like but they never say it is the shining it is just my opinion that these boys shine. The story also deals with aliens so it reminds me of Tommyknockers but no events from that book are mentioned.
Essentially Dreamcatcher is a story about an alien invasion and five childhood friends Jonesy, Henry, Pete, Beaver, and Duddits being caught up in the middle to stop the aliens from killing all of mankind.
This book is so worth reading and such a great story.
