Maybe not my favorite Stephen King but definitely one of the good ones. Fell apart a little in the end (that epilogue...eh) but how fun!

This book has a very similar childhood/friendship vibe to It. This is, however, maybe, a bit more gross. It's also mystical, paranormal, and also... Aliens, and Psychopaths.

This made me smirk and squirm in equal measure - which was a strange sensation.

The many nods to Derry, missing kids, and the Loser Club were pretty cool.

In Derry, Maine, four young boys stood up for a kid who couldn’t stand up for himself. This act of bravery changed them in ways they could never understand.

Flash forward 25 years and the four boys are now four men who are still friends and get together for an annual hunting trip but this year something is different. A man stumbles into their midst mumbling about lights in the sky and emitting a terrible stench. These four friends are about to become part of something they never could have imagined. Will they all make it out alive and what has this got to do with the Dreamcatcher?

I was given “Dreamcatcher” for Christmas by my brother, his girlfriend and my nephew as part of my challenge to complete all Stephen King’s books before I turn 40 next year. It’s a book that I haven’t heard a lot about and what I have heard has been quite mixed, leaning more towards the negative. It’s not one of King’s most popular books but I went into it with an open mind. I’m also aware that this is a book written during the period when King was recovering following the accident when he was run over.

In a similar way to “The Tommyknockers” there were good parts and bad and I felt it was a little bloated. We clocked in at just under 700 pages but there definitely seemed like a little more filler than usual and this is coming from someone who loves “The Stand”!

The story isn’t told in a linear fashion, there is a lot of back and forth between what happened in their childhood and what was going on now, which normally I like but something about this one just left me really frustrated by it. I constantly felt like I was missing some vital information about the characters. I also felt I didn’t have enough time to really connect with some of the characters, which is not normally a problem I have with King books as his characterisation is usually second to none.

There are some nice little Easter eggs in there for Constant Readers as we would expect with Derry being part of the story. I always love seeing those little links to other stories and they feel even more special the more books I’ve read.

I would have loved to have seen more about the character of Duddits and what he was capable of as it was barely touched on and more pages could definitely have been given to him.

Overall, I’m glad I’ve read it but I don’t think it’s a book I’ll be rushing to re-read.

4/5

Honestly? I absolutely loved this. Perfect entertainment in my opinion. Part of my enjoyment is probably this being my first King novel, so I don’t have the context for how good or not good it is in the grand scheme of his works, but I just enjoyed reading this about as much as any book I’ve read in my life. I was genuinely looking forward to reading it when I got home by the end I was nearing the end. Rare that a book has me wanting to pick it up as much as this one did. Can’t wait to read more King.
