ehhhh it was pretty good. i liked the general plot but at the same time i found some parts kinda odd. like the twists felt unrealistic because of how we’d were reading from their point of view. i don’t know it was good and i’m not saying that the writing was bad or anything i just didn’t really love it

didn't care enough about any of these characters who all seemed really self absorbed and 2-dimensional. the whole tegan and chloe battling over jessica and chloe and jessica battling over jake (not joking, they used the word battle MULTIPLE times in reference to characters feuding with each other) was so cringey and honestly i hated it. the only thing i will say is justice for jake!! the entire time i was reading i was like jake deserves better. jessica, tegan, chloe, etc? mmmm not so much

also i rly wish there would be ONE ya mystery where the main couple stays together thru the novel 3

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

4 stars.

Spoilers ahead. I will not reveal anything big - most of the review vaguely alludes to plot, structure, and characters.

I was drawn into this by it being compared to Gone Girl and Karen McManus, and it did not disappoint. The writing is excellently crafted, and the characters are well-developed...even if they are obnoxious. Jess, especially, was frustrating. But the TWIST. I wasn't expecting it to be so...like that. I was taken aback, which is such a good thing I can't overstate it. I'm used to predicting twists by the halfway point, but not this one. I'd agree with the publisher's comparisons, but I would also say that this book would be great for fans of Kara Thomas or Courtney Summers as well. A great YA Mystery/Thriller that stands out in a sea of Mystery/Thrillers. The only reason I'm giving it a 4 instead of a 5 is because of how viscerally I disliked some of Jess's actions.

The back cover copy of this book compares it to a couple other big titles, one of which is one of my favorite books. I set my expectations based on that, and I think that was a mistake for me.

I felt like the characters in this book were a little bit flat, especially the girls. Other than their obsession with Jake and their rivalry, I didn't feel like I really got to know them or understand them. I think Jake had some layering-- kind of a dark past, some heavy stuff that he was going through as the police investigated the disappearance of a girl.

The mystery itself was interesting. It kept me on my toes and made me rethink things a few times, so I felt like that was well done. I liked that the mystery and reasons and people involved grew deeper and more tangled as the story progressed.

On the whole, I think it was a good mystery. The comparison to a book with really rich characters threw my expectations off, though. If you're really more interested in the suspense/murder mystery elements, then I think you'd probably still enjoy this book.

Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions my own.
