As a music enthusiast, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Bits of advice and interesting insights are elegantly scattered throughout the conversations, so the reader may have the possibility to relish the casual tone of the book while simultaneously gaining precious and practicable knowledge.
The reason behind the three-star rating has to do with the unnecessary details and lack of structure/consistency that I personally sensed and which I found a bit annoying at times. Such details dulled down the otherwise vibrant timbre of the conversations.

This book has made me reminisce about the bond other musicians and I brought together back in my childhood years and early teens. I miss that bond, that "spark" and "magic". There is more to music than meets the eye, always, regardless of how much or little one is familiarised with it. And I find it absolutely worth it to spend time every once in a while trying to figure out why.
This is my first Murakami book that I read and I'm so looking forward to reading more of his. This was delightful and awe-inspiring. Needless to say, highly recommended.

Murakami conducts a series of pleasant, interesting interviews with Ozawa. The stakes are not high, except that Ozawa is in recovery from cancer treatments and is getting up in years - so what better time for the two to look back on a long career and get at the enduring appeal of great music? And what better way to remind readers that the classical music tradition is still alive, and worth knowing and caring about?
One thing that's always appealed to me about Murakami is his cosmopolitan cultural literacy - he can write or talk about seemingly anything, and is the kind of person who not only appreciates musical styles as diverse as classical, jazz, and rock, but integrates all of it into his work. He can converse about concerti and opera with one of the world's most renowned conductors, and the whole thing comes across as utterly unpretentious. In fact, it even puts the reader at ease when they might be scratching their heads at references they don't quite understand. In other words, it's a fine gate way to appreciating something unknown.
