I absolutely adored this book. I haven't ever read a book like this before. It had me wishing I could actually listen to them conversing with each other.
It was an interview styled book, but I can't believe how it kept me attracted to it. Maybe because I am a music listener and performer both....
Some of the revelations in this book were so simple yet so new for me, I was astonished. The sudden mention of food when Mr. Ozawa needed to eat came as a surprise every time, and somehow brought a smile to my face - it kind of showed that this was a very laid back interview, more like two friends talking.
I learnt a lot as a music creator from here.... I will definitely give this a re-read once I progress some more in the world of Music.
The fact that the physical copy of the book is absolutely stunning helps too, I think.

I came into reading this book as a big fan of Haruki Murakami's fiction and as a student of music history.

This book is less "musings on life and art in conversation using Ozawa and Murakami's own experiences" and more "let's listen to this piece by this orchestra, interject occasionally, and maybe go down a hyper-specific tangent or two".

With that said, some of the conversation was still interesting enough to me as a classical music non-listener. I found listening to the works mentioned while reading their comments added great value to the experience, so if there isn't an audiobook version of this, there should be and that should be the primary way to enjoy.

I would only recommend this to readers already well versed in Ozawa's work or classical music in general.

It's baby's first Murakami, but I'm not sure it fully counts as it's nonfiction! Murakami & Ozawa are both very thoughtful individuals who care deeply about the understanding of art. You don't need to be a musician to follow along, though a cursory understanding of musical periods may help in the Mahler discussion.

Will need to reread with the recordings at hand- I read the bulk of this at work, where we had a sudden crackdown on using work computers to stream media :(
