A real masterpiece! I felt it was paced well and very gripping. Having read Huck Finn for the first time immediately before really helped me to compare and contrast and the differences stood out a lot. Despite the subject matter being pretty dark the humour still stood out. The only reason it's not a five star book for me is because I wasn't convinced by the "twist", it felt like an afterthought and the author didn't really commit to it in his characterisations. Can't wait to see a future film adaptation of this one.

I’ve never read Huckleberry Finn, so I went into this book with little context and was blown away. The reimagining of a classic story in this was was fascinating, and I really fell into the story. I Can see why this book is popping up on so many must read lists.

I really enjoyed James. It was very easy to read and I enjoyed the new perspective on Huckleberry Finn and the secret lives of the slaves, particularly of Jim.

I loved Huckleberry Finn when I read it in school. Loved this even more for illuminating the story and journey through Jim's perspective as a slave from the south. brilliant and eye opening. Also just a really well paced story from start to finish. I'd read this book again, even if it were just for the ending (wow).

An incredible book. It’s a telling of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the slave Jim’s point of view but so much more. It’s a commentary on the inhumanity of slavery and the shared humanity of all people. It’s a story of adventure but also of growth, love and freedom. One of the best books I’ve ever read.
