Perfection. I loved this book, perhaps even more than I loved Anne of Green Gables. Emily reminded me so much of myself, especially when she talked about her writing. How she'd say things like, "I can't stop writing; writing is IN me." Emily is charming and adorable. I had trouble remembering that she wasn't real at times.
I loved this book. Simply loved.
Growing up with the influence of a grandmother born in the late 1890s in my life, I learned. Through Emily and her Aunt Elizabeth I added dimension to this relationship which could only be enjoyed by relating another's experience. It identified with "the flash," Emily's intention wrought impossibly by her drive. And the consternation of being misunderstood. The language is well-considered and beautifully drawn. I'll read it again. And again.

This first one is my favourite of the Emily books. As a young girl she is at her most interesting - innocent, determined, honest, passionate, precocious and so very different to the adults who surround her. She is a great character and provides funny and profound insights into the other characters through her letters to her dead father. Both these books and The Anne of Green Gables series make me want to visit Prince Edward Island, since the author does such a wonderful job of evoking the beauty both nature and people there in a nostalgic time before technology. A quick read but full of charm and insight.
I've read all three of the Emily of [b:New Moon|49041|New Moon (The Twilight Saga, Book 2)|Stephenie Meyer|http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/414jgcy2FAL._SL75_.jpg|3203964] series, and they're not really my favorites, especially the last one.

Many parallels to Anne of Green Gables, but I didn’t like it as well.
