Emily of New Moon is a charming story by L.M. Montgomery. Emily is an orphan raised by her aunts after the death of her father. She learns some humbling lessons along the way. What I liked most about Emily is her sense of wonder at nature and her delight in simple things. She is brave and courageous even when life is difficult. I didn’t enjoy this as much as Anne of Green Gables. Some of the plot is a bit repetitive and I found many similarities with Anne of Green Gables but the latter is much better. It is still a sweet story, however, and I’m interested to read the rest of the series.

I re-read this because I loved in my teen years, far more than I ever loved Anne of Green Gables. Where Anne gave me severe secondhand embarrassment, and had an affinity for the kind of poetry that always made my eyes glaze over, Emily was quieter, with less flare of temper, but more intensity of immovable determination when she felt it called for, and her poetry was more about seeing the world in an odd and fantastic way, which I found much more relatable.

Trying to re-read this as an adult, I almost gave up a few chapters in. The early parts of the book are just BRUTAL with adults who have no real sympathy and little compassion, or very occasionally those who have sympathy but little power to improve her life. After a break, I picked it back it up, discovered I was past the worst and mostly enjoyed the middle, for the all the reasons I remembered loving Emily.

Toward the end, I discovered a story moment I'd forgotten all about but absolutely MADE the story and *almost* made the brutal start worth it all. I won't say anything more for risk of spoilers, but it was beautiful.
