Each time I read this book it’s like visiting an old friend. I got given the trilogy when I was seven and they have remained in my top five books ever since. Even reading them as I’ve got older they’ve not lost that certain spark to them which few books have. Growing up I always wanted to be best friends with Anne but felt more akin to Emily, probably as she is more introverted and I connected with her a bit more. While she’s a slightly darker character it makes her more real. I think what makes these books as brilliant as they are is that Emily is a character who is completely comfortable in her own skin and happy in her own thoughts and distant imagined worlds, which is refreshing. As she said herself, ““I wouldn’t want to be anyone but myself even if I am plain”.

“Emily was too happy to be tired on the way home. There seemed to be a bubble of joy in her heart—a shimmering, prismatic bubble. When she came to the top of the big hill and looked across to New Moon, her eyes were satisfied and loving. How beautiful it was, lying embowered in the twilight of the old trees; the tips of the loftiest spruces came out in purple silhouette against the north-western sky of rose and amber; down behind it the Blair Water dreamed in silver; the Wind Woman had folded her misty bat-wings in a valley of sunset and stillness lay over the world like a blessing. Emily felt sure everything would be all right.”

Oh, L.M. Montgomery, you are such a wonder. How is everything you wrote so beautiful?

Emily Byrd Starr could give Anne Shirley a run for her money in beloved heroines. What a lovely, sassy, passionate, poetry-filled girl she is! At first, I was afraid her story was just going to be too sad, what with being orphaned, a cold aunt, a disdainful teacher, there were too many negatives in Emily’s young life. But as she adjusted to her existence at New Moon, things grew better. Soon she had the friends she needed, the inspiration she craved, and, eventually, the familial love she needed to fill the hole in her heart. And then a mystery cropped up that was compelling and romantic and sad. I loved this book. I’m excited there are two more Emily books for me to enjoy.

A good read. If you're in the right mood. This book was a little slow for me.

But it is still a sweet, engaging story about Emily Byrd Starr as a young girl. She is navigating her way around the family she never knew, after her parents pass away. She finds friends and trouble in her new home.

I found Emily very similar to Anne (of Green Gables). I don't know which character came first, but they say this book is more autobiographical, so maybe L.M. Montgomery just bases these characters on herself.

It was an interesting and fun read. I plan to read the other 2 books in the series, but I have to be in the right mood.

One of those books that my mother recommended to me when I was younger. I was a girl who loved books and writing and was veery emotional so obviously I identified with Emily a lot.
It's a book that will always have a special place in my heart.

What an enjoyable book! It was so helpful and light during this darker time of year. I enjoyed it and hearing about how you can still have a positive grasp on life.

I also liked the two references to Jabe Eyre. There may have been more, but I noted two.

I wish they had Elisa and Emily meet again before the end of the book. I think there was much to say outside of the observation of how her father treated her.

the world building and the writing omg i love

A very well done novel about a young girl's life. I love the interaction, the characters, and the morals behind it all. Very well done.
