There’s a saying that says “every translation is a betrayal” and i think that applies here— Japanese to english is so hard and i think it results in writing that feels super detached. Otherwise the characters were super believable and the story was interesting but it was just meh. I feel like the author was on to a lot of cool themes like repression of the self and disassociation and then she just like stopped writing lol

This book was labeled as feminist noir with queer characters, and it was in the teen section at the library, so I had a certain expectation of what this book would be like. It was not like my expectations, and I really don't think it belongs in the teen section. I did not like any of the characters, and didn't really understand them either. I didn't see what was feminist about it either, except possibly in a "support women's rights but mostly women's wrongs" way. I also expected a murder mystery and just got stuck with murder. There was one part I did like - each of the characters had point of view chapters, and it was interesting finding out what they knew about each other, what they thought the others knew about them, and what the others really did know about them.

hmm. took me a long time to read it so idk if i should rate it. definitely an interesting read, and i did really enjoy it. teenagers are capable of so much cruelty, and entering adulthood can feel like death. in a certain way, it is. exceptional critique of the strange sexualization of teenage girls. very sad that despite it, they aren't taken seriously; interesting to see how the girls in this coped with this. was not sure why the one transphobic part was included :/ worm was extremely well written, and it was interesting to contrast his way of thinking with the ways of thinking of the girls as well as how he saw masculinity (the physicality of his 'salt suit', trying to act like a war criminal, etc.). further served as a critique of misogyny. very haunting ending

the writing was very boring and plain, not engaging at all. i found the characters pretty one dimensional which was disappointing. i think trying to cover five characters in 210 pages just didn’t work at all.
