I thought Jainan's constant self-loathing and self-deprecation was annoying, and that was probably the reason it took me longer than usual to get interested in the plot, but I enjoyed the book overall. I don't think I care enough about the world to want to read the companion novel to this, especially since the world building in this book was very lacking and you were kind of just left there to wonder what the hell is going on, but it wasn't the worst world-building I'd read.
