Exasperating at first, but I liked it in the end. The MC, Matt King, comes off as a dimwit which made it hard to believe he was supposed to be an attorney. But I guess it's his progression as a detached father & husband into someone who actually cares that made me keep reading. I thought the dialogue was a bit stilted & often unbelievable but I'm glad I stuck with it & finished. All the major characters seemed to redeem themselves which made it worth it.

Absolutely LOVED this book! Thoughtful, well written story with characters you could relate to and a story that was compelling. Was sad to reach the last page as I just wasn't ready to let this family go.

Good story about a man learning to be a dad in a really bad situation

It was mediocre. For almost the entire book, until the very end when I thought it was too late, I found Matt to be really cold, callous, and unfeeling, and a really bad parent. The other characters were just okay. It also reminded me of every slow, painful death of close friends and family members that I've been through, so it was super depressing, as well. Would not recommend it if you have been through something like that recently.

Loved this book! I'd have to say its my favorite read so far this year.

This was lovely - if you liked the film, you'll like the book. The film was pretty faithful to the story, with the exception of some small changes but nothing that affects the outcome or your reaction. Hemmings is a rich writer whose characters come alive off the pages. You even feel as though you are experiencing Hawaii for real. In short, this is about human emotion and how life sweeps us all at any instant, without warning. It is both sad and irreverent, and despite the tragedies they face, the family learns to come together and appreciate what they have.

The family dynamics make this book, and I loved Mr. King. Ultimately when I reflect on this book, my heart is sad, but I loved the ride.
