Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood to read this book. But I didn't take much away from it. I don't need to like all the characters in a book, but I need to be interested in them. In here, I just wasn't.

It does all come together in an interesting way at the end.

I liked this book. It's certainly not action packed, by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a nice read...and having just been to Hawaii it was nice to be able to envision all of the places that the author wrote about!!

I haven't seen the movie, but it was easy to imagine George Clooney as the narrator here. This was a quick and engaging read, and the characters were well constructed. Hemmings did an impressive job of developing character and a sense of Hawaii in a relatively short book. I had never read anything by him before, but I quite like him as an author.

Really enjoyed starting right in the action, with a plot that could have been too fantastic if not written so well. The characters were interesting, and the father very real. Very human.

3.5 stars - recommended by the library for Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month. A pretty quick and enjoyable read!
emotional funny sad slow-paced

“Goodbye my love, my friend, my pain, my happiness”

Great story! I decided to read it before I saw the movie and I'm glad I did. At some points absurdly hilarious and achingly sad at others. I thought it was more a book about parenting than anything.

gelesen damit ich mitreden kann.
An sich nicht schlecht, viellecciht etwas naiv - kein Muss

Better than the movie!
