how can someone write historical fiction and make it this unnecessarily long but so gripping at the same time? also, absolutely giving it to miss burton for the absolute immigrant experience representation + the mystery, that somehow DOES last for the entire book and it's always surprising despite all hints (or maybe i am just dumb)

A turbulent tale of love, ambition and fate, cooked in the crater of history. Burton knows how to tell a story.

The first half was alright, but it really picked up for me after that.

I do have to say: I would have rated it higher if one of the narrators wouldn't have had such a difficult voice for me to listen to. The intonation just sounded off at times.

The Muse was a very well written book. I loved the two different time eras that the plot takes place. It was interesting to see how Olive, Teresa, and Isaac's lives intertwined with Lawrie and Odelle's lives. This novel had me guessing the entire way through up until the end!
