I wanted to read this book since I was a child. Back then these books were very expensive and so I never got to see it until now. These days you can find them easier at a thrift store. I loved to read about gnomes. I loved the drawings, they are beautiful. I was thinking about things I really have seen in nature, maybe there is a thing like a gnome :-D.

My parents had this book on the coffee table in the family room growing up. I loved this book, I would frequently look at and make up stories, so I suppose it's unfair to say that I've actually read it, I've read parts of it, but probably not the whole thing - the pictures were far to captivating.

LOOOOOOVED this as a kid--full of delightful details about gnomes. A reference books for fantasy dorks, I guess. It's one of the only books I don't have anymore that I wish I did.

I can’t believe I had gone through so many years, working in libraries, without discovering this gem until this past week. Since gnomes make up a big part of this year’s summer reading theme, I have a gnome display on the bulletin board in the children’s area. One of my coworkers and I started talking about the nature of gnomes, and she showed me this deluxe edition of “Gnomes” by Wil Huygen.

Admittedly, I haven’t read many books about gnomes, but I would bet that this book is the ultimate and definitive guide to gnomes.

It was easy to see why this book would and apparently does appeal to so many. The author was a physician, and this is reflected in his observant, scientific writing style. Gnomes become so fascinating, so interesting, and the world they live in is huge and magical and even real thanks to the author’s “field notes” about gnomes, their behaviors, and their environments.

Rien Poortvelt’s illustrations are beautiful. They have such an old world feel and the cursive of the letters which explain certain points of interest in the art creates a lovely visual balance.

The author and illustrator cover everything there is to know about gnomes. They even cover the lesser known parts of gnome biology and sexuality, as well as the different kinds of gnomes from the familiar House Gnome to the nefarious Siberian Gnome.

Simply one of the most charming books I’ve ever had the delight of paging through. I found myself explaining (in great detail) to my boyfriend the subtle differences between dune and garden gnomes when he interrupted to ask, “You do know gnomes aren’t real, correct?” Yes, of course...I mean...unless?

My next couple of days are going to be spent tracking down as many copies of this perfect gnome tome as I can for all of the kids—and appreciators of whimsy—in my life.

Onovertroffen, de schilderingen door Rien Poortvliet zijn werkelijk prachtig! De verhaalteksten staan misschien niet op hetzelfde niveau als de beelden, maar 't spreekt zó heerlijk tot de verbeelding allemaal.
