Meh. The first 100 pages were promising and then everything went downhill. RTC

"From China to London, going through Italy and Mesopotamia, The Calling is the beginning of an end that you can't miss"
I said this before, but I need to say it again. This is nothing like The Hunger Games and if you read that somewhere, don't pay attention.
I love the idea to make this book so interactive, but all those clues to resolve a puzzle seems too time-consuming, but the idea was incredible. I came after this book when I finished reading I am Number 4, and I see the small similarities and this one is a bit more precise than I am Number 4.
I haven't read a book packed with so much action, killing, and different characters like this. It is a bit cruel with touches of divine justice, with unrealistic abilities and mercenary attitudes. I guess with the right training, we all can be what the myths have said: killing machines with control over one's body and mind.
The story goes around the end of the world and a game to save one's people. You have been trained for this, trained like all those before you. You have no limits. The faith of your loved ones and the world is at stake. Money, corruption, criminality, you chose how to play.
This is not country bound, go where you have to go and do it now. This novel was a good way to escape the lockdown, but also a reminder that the end is near. Personally speaking, something I love about this book is that day uses real places, mythological stories and places, all-time secrets, and mysteries to develop a high-quality adventure story.

I have two main issues with this book. The first is the way it treats violence. This book is almost gleefully graphic. Sure, if you’re into unnecessary violence, it might be your thing, but it certainly isn’t mine. I really liked the characters (except the sociopath ones), but I hate the innovative and horrible ways they come up with to kill each other.
Second off, this book is clearly a thinly veiled attempt to make money. This book has been out for less than five months and it already has two “companion novellas” for you to buy. Moreover, this book is almost 500 pages and it still needs a sequel somehow (just another thing for you to buy).
I’m not even gonna get into Hunger Games comparisons, because that’s already been done. Suffice to say, this book is basically the Hunger Games, set nowadays and (somehow) more violent. It certainly has its differences, but there are too many similarities for it to be a coincidence.
So just find a different book. This one is a waste of time.

Den var i den grad spændende, alligevel manglede jeg at binde mig lidt mere med karakterne.
couldn't finish it, actually put me in a reading slump, decided to try again, and subsequently decided i really didn't care. which i think speaks to the quality of the story. there was so much going on and so many characters, and after the 140 pages i had been able to get through, the story had not been able to get me to care about any of it.
i am glad for those who enjoy this book, i just find it isn't for me. i wanted to love it, but trying to convince myself i did just held me back from other books i might enjoy. and so i donate my copy in the hopes that someone else will.
