In this new thrilled from Charlie Donlea, a dying ex-partner asks a former detective- now turned-ER doctor (Ethan) to solve the decade-old cold case of a missing teenage girl.

Ethan is drawn into a twisted psychological game with a sinister connection to his father- who was also a detective- who died on the job.

I enjoyed this novel. At first I felt like it was going to be predictable, with the good characters doing good things, and the bad characters doing bad things...but I was wrong! Terribly, horribly wrong! The twists and turns kept coming and coming at me. And we've been set up for a nice sequel here, too.

Thank you so much to NetGalley for this ARC!

This book was great! I was immediately hooked. The different POVโ€™s and timeline jumps were interesting, definitely made the story more gripping. I loved all the twists and turns throughout the book, but towards the end I felt like I was getting whiplash with each chapter and was ultimately left in shock.

My biggest issue with the writing style was the authorโ€™s incessant need to be overly descriptive with model names of anything that had an engine. It felt very clunky and forced, and took me out of the story itself every single time. This is my 1st Charlie Donlea book so Iโ€™m not sure if this is a regular thing though.

I have never listened to an audiobook from this author (Charlie Donlea) and I rarely give 5-stars.

However, this book had twists after twists after twists in the storyline. Then to discover itโ€™s a standalone novel and not series was very disappointing.

What a ride! If you love short chapters, not being able to press pause on life to listen/read, and don't mind your jaw on the floor, then the newest Charlie Donlea book is for you!

I highly recommend going into this one blind! The narrator was 5/5โญ๏ธ!

Ugh I wanted to like this book, but women just arenโ€™t treated as people. Theyโ€™re only exist as they relate to the men, then theyโ€™re forgotten. Not fleshed out. It just kept niggling at me. Disappointing, as Iโ€™ve liked the authorโ€™s other books.

Guess Again is the newest thriller by Charlie Donlea. Iโ€™ve read a few books by Donlea and have yet to be disappointed.

10 years after the disappearance of Callie Jones, her father becomes governor and commissions a task force to look into the disappearance. He tasks Ethan Hall, currently a doctor but formerly a DCI investigator with a 100% solve rate, to review the files.

As the investigation begins to intertwine with Ethanโ€™s own demons from the death of his father, he must figure out the connections before itโ€™s too late.

I received an ARC on exchange for an honest review. Thanks to the publisher, the author, and Netgalley.

The title is completely accurate because once I thought I knew where it was going the story derailed (in the best way) and surprised me with plenty of shocking and satisfying twists. Fast paced, bingeable read with a full cast of characters and by the end everything comes together perfectly. There was never a slow moment in this story and I loved how each piece played an important role, he sets the stage perfectly.

Thank you NetGalley! This book comes out July 2025.

My library used to send out a weekly newsletter with all the books they ordered. I saw the authors book on the list and thought that sounded interesting. And it was. Down the rabbit hole I went, reading all his books. Iโ€™ve never been disappointed. Todayโ€™s new realness is no exception.

Itโ€™s a complicated and layered story that was easy to read. I connected with Ethan from the start. I wanted to know more about what made him tick, his relationship his Dad, and how the interactions with his Dadโ€™s killer would develop.

There was such an interesting cat and mouse game going on. As I kept trying to guess how this would conclude, I didnโ€™t even end up close to the outcome. And that twist. Never saw it coming.

I was rapt from the start. So much so that I then listened when the book came out in audio. It didnโ€™t hurt that Vivienne Leheny is the narrator. I always enjoy listening to her and she did a great job with this one. I loved it the second time around as much as the first.

Botha five star read and listen from me. And maybe the start of a new series? I could definitely revisit Ethan and his new normal.
