Lots of historical information, but very little character or love story development.

I love Raimond Le Veq and Sable Fontaine so much because I wanted Raimond to fall hard for Sable. I read seven books by Beverly Jenkins however, this book is one of my favorites from her. I love the fact that Sable family history involves royalty that was past down through generations even with the dealing of slavery. I love that Sable had a big heart and actually care about her people. I love that Raimond court Sable even with everything he had to do with the Army. Beverly Jenkins writes such beautiful love stories with complex and beautiful characters. I love the arrange marriage part of this book because I really wanted them to get back together after the incident with Sable running away.   I am so happy Morris got what he deserve at the end of the book. I am looking forward to reading more from Beverly Jenkins.

Ohhhh my gosh okay so this book was WAY heavier than I expected it to be. The book literally opens with Sable (FMC) finding out she’s been sold to a man who she is certain plans to SA her, finding out how her mom died (absolutely gruesome), and then her great aunt burns down the house she lives in so she can run away. She meets up with HARRIET TUBMAN who takes her to a camp where she meets Raimond (MMC) and like...the first half of the book is BLEAK. Once we move into the Reconstruction period of the book and she has her chance with Raimond things do get better but when things are bad they are BAD. But! They’re bad in a very compelling and well-written way. I just wish a little more time could have been dedicated to the romance.

Such a classic - not only do Sable and Raimond have a steamy romance, but it happens during a pivotal time in our nation's history - the end of the Civil War and beginning of Reconstruction, and all the dangers and opportunities presented to Black Americans during this time.
