Death of a Salesman

Arthur Miller

3.46 AVERAGE

I wish I'd had two pieces of advice about Death of a Salesman before reading it. First, read each part in one sitting. Second, the first half will be a bit of a slog (in my experience) compared to the second half, as the first half is, IMO, people talking in a room, whereas in the second half, things happen. Both halves have a lot of meaning and speak volumes to the worth we assign to people under capitalism and the pressure that puts on families and relationships. Still, I found the stakes in the second half to be much higher and more apparent and each scene more captivating. Glad I finally read it. Some day, I hope to see it.
emotional reflective sad

Arthur Miller must not have pulled inspiration from his own life seeing as he was coming home to Marilyn Monroe.

Psychological horror in the current economy.

quotes:

“i stopped in the middle of that building and i saw — the sky. i saw the things that I love in this world. the work and the food and time to sit and smoke. and i looked at the pen and said to myself, what the hell am i grabbing this for? why am i trying to become what i don't want to be? what am i doing in an office, making a contemptuous, begging fool of myself, when all i want is out there, waiting for me the minute i say i know who i am! why can't i say that, willy?”

“you can't eat the orange and throw the peel away - a man is not a piece of fruit.”

“will you let me go for christ’s sake? will you take that phony dream and burn it before something happens?

“figure it out. work a lifetime to pay off a house. you finally own it, and there's nobody to live in it.

my review:

many good quotes in here, and i loved the overall messaging, but i think my brain couldn’t do it justice. i need to see it on a stage. i want to see and hear willy going through this hurt, i want to hear biff’s speech, and i want to bawl my eyes out. it did leave me with a tug on my heart. i saw there are many different movie adaptations on letterboxd, so that’s my next watch!!

An American classic that shows its age. If you are just reading this script, good luck trying to understand it. Scattered, tense and at times supernatural, this play shows a man's descent into narcissim and arguably, dementia. If this play is done right, it packs quite a punch but the further we get from its publication date, the less clear its value becomes.

"A small man can be just as exhausted as a great man."

This was yet another play about the Americana Dream. The ending was really random, and the plot was random as well. This man was delusional but what he did was not the solution. Also...
infidelity... yikes.
I'm glad that I didn't study this in school.
