I loved this audio book. Humorous, interesting, great performances. I'll definitely be reading another in the series soon!

I listened to this book, and absolutely loved it! The narrator was fantastic, and all of the characters were charming and funny and lovable. I’m looking forward to the next in the series, and will definitely listen to the audio version again.

A sweet story/coming of age. Not a lot of action, but well written.

"Old boy, in this life there will always be a certain amount of shit to be shoveled. I really would urge you to buy a long-handled spade and simply get on with it."

A perfect heartwarming comfort novel.

I read this book because of the glowing recommendation from a patron at the library I work at. Some of the "plotlines" were all right, though they read a little like episodes of some BBC dramedy like Doc Martin. At times, this book read like a quote-and-citation competition between characters, and it got really annoying after a while. Overall, I found this to be pretty predictable and formulaic - perhaps I've seen too much BBC. It definitely isn't enough to get me to want to read the rest of the series.

Enjoyed this book but it took awhile for me to warm up to the characters and setting. Don't know if I will pursue the subsequent volumes. I could see it as a series on PBS though. It has that sort of quality.

Did I feel like I was reading a doctor's version of All Creatures Great and Small? Doc Martin in the sixties? Yes. Was it annoying? Not at all. I love the people, the food, the accents and all of the well developed characters. I did find the author's tendency to throw in period things just to remind us what time frame it was in, a bit ham handed, but they weren't too frequent. I will read the next book in the series.
