For me this was a cross between Tales of the City and Vicar of Dibley, and that's a very good thing.

An Irish Country Doctor is an absolutely charming novel, shot through with warmth, uproarious humor, compassion, and a glimpse into a simpler time that sadly is passing away. If we can recover something of the community spirit, the value of abiding together, learning from and loving each other despite our flaws and eccentricities as portrayed in this book, there just might be hope for us after all. The book is full of sentimentality, but perhaps we should start calling it by its right name.

Wisdom.

The story of Barry Laverty adjusting to his new life and profession in Ballybuckleboo was decent and fun, but I was not motivated to continue the series. This book reminds me of the BBC show Doc Martin, but steeped in the Irish culture, which I enjoyed. The unique characters make the book entertaining. The pace is generally slow with a few intense medical situations. There is also a love interest storyline for Laverty, which was okay. It didn't stand out in my mind.

I'm not entirely sure that I would enjoy this if it wasn't an audio book -- Barry is a self-righteous prig. However, he does seem to be recovering from that state, the audio book narrator does a great job with voices and accents, and it grew on me over time. It's definitely not as captivating as Herriot, for all the similarities.

This was a sweet book that left me with a smile on my face. If you have had more than your share of dark and dreary books and would like a nice change, this is the book for you. It is the charming story of Dr. Barry Laverty, a recent medical school graduate who finds himself working in a tiny Irish village. After having done his training in the bustling city of Belfast, Barry is not entirely certain that Ballybucklebo is the place he wants to settle down in; or if the curmudgeonly Dr Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly is the person that he wants to work for. But he decides to give it a try, and the result is a delightful story of the ups and down of Barry's new life as an Irish Country Doctor. The book is hilarious in some places while quite dramatic in others. It is the first title in a series by the same author. I will definitely continue on with the series, as I found this book so warm and refreshing. I would highly recommend this breath of fresh air.
