My expectations were too high, but it was charming
I really enjoyed the book about Kinky, so I thought I'd give this one a try. Oh dear. I have to stop now, about 1/3 of the way through. Dr. Fingal is so mean and so condescending. He is exactly what is wrong with medicine and managed care the world over. And he is violent on top of it, which is again treated as some kind of funny joke. I am not amused. The world is already overfull with arrogant, insensitive bastards. I don't need to use my precious moments to read about them too. I'm bitter about this.

An Irish country setting, a rambunctious Labrador, two crazy doctors...what’s not to love!
A library patron recommended this to me... didn't want to brush her off. It was nice, a bit like Herriot's All Creatures Great & Small, but the patients were villagers in Ireland in the '60s.
There's quite a series, and pretty popular.... but one was enough.

I'd actually give this one 4 1/2 stars, if Goodreads would let me! Really enjoyed this one. Darling book.
This was a very pleasant reading experience. I liked all the episodic medical stories in each chapter, and I liked Kinky and Fingal and Barry all learning about each other. I really hated the love story - no tension or build up = no love story worth reading about. Overall, a good summer afternoon read.
This book was very enjoyable It read like it was meant to be a show on PBS (like EastEnders or even Dowton Abbey). It wasn't like those shows in regards to soap opera like plot lines, but rather quaint, Northern Irish dialect and people. Like the Irish countryside itself, you really enjoy the experience of this book. While you might not go back for some time, it is always good to know there are other chances (other books in the series) to go back and escape from the chaos of your daily life.
