Thought the movie was fun when I watched that a few years ago, so when I found a used copy of the book I was excited to read it. Unfortunately it didn’t turn out well..

My copy comes with the origin short story included at the beginning. I read about 25 pages of that and really didn’t like it, then skipped to the actual Meg book hoping I would enjoy that more, but after about 15 pages of that I’m calling it quits.

Maybe there’s a fun story somewhere in this book, but I just can’t get passed the terrible writing and the sexism. To the little free library it goes, hopefully the next person will have more luck with it.

Story wise, it's really good. I was engaged and interested the whole time, and he does a really good job keeping the tension high. But the characters? Some of the weakest character writing I have ever seen.
The only character that you get any feeling about is Maggie, and she's obviously written to hate. But the love interest, Terry, is also absolutely intolerable, and there's zero development of her romance with Jonas. He suddenly goes from not liking her to shagging her and she goes from hating him to shagging him, back to hating him, back to liking him, but never in all that did I ever feel like there was any meat to their relationship. She's reckless and annoying, and he's just a generic guy.

I hope his ability to write characters improves somewhat in later books...

If you enjoyed Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, this is a book I would immediately be recommending. It has a mix of horror, action, and a bit of drama. The story follows Dr. Jonas Taylor, a former naval submersible pilot suffering from PTSD after his last dive resulted in two civilian deaths. In his retirement from diving he has turned his focus on to studying the prehistoric Megalodon shark, presenting theories that this apex predator could very well still be in the deepest depths of the ocean - The Marianas Trench. Pulled in by a former colleague to investigate what happened to the equipment for a specialized project near the trench, Jonas must face his fears and descend into the depths. What he finds is some truth to what happened to him years prior, as well as a dangerous predator that manages to escape into a world it was never meant to coexist with. I found this a gripping story, though not being math minded whenever they mentioned the size of the shark I had to sit and try to find something in comparison. (It led to a heated but humorous exchange between my husband and I which bled into our dnd group to which one of the guys said “Take the biggest shark you can think of and… MAKE IT BIGGER”) By the end of the book, my mind seemed to finally accept the size. One thing that I found intriguing were the parts done from the shark’s perspective. It was a risk taken by the author, but it has a good payoff. This is book one in a series of five. The movie is loosely based off the events of this story, but still fun to watch if you get the chance.

Ok so I was curious as to how the book compares to the movie.. so I listened to it in audio. Yeah definitely different from the movie..
