Completely love this book. It’s not usually my type of book but I loved it. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series as well as seeing the film.
This would have been rated slightly higher if the edition I listened to hadn't included "Meg-Origins," a completely unnecessary (and 75% redundant) novella detailing some of the backstory from the first book.
As for the original "Meg" it's fine, but honestly, what do you expect from a book where the protagonist, who has/will survive a metaphorical/literal belly of the sea beast encounter, is named Jonas? Seriously? That's the level of subtlety here. So enjoy the romp for what it is, but don't expect much more.

Let me say one thing: this is a badly written book... BUT I did enjoy the shark ripping people to shreds which is why it's not a one star. Phrases like "Asian beauty" and "budding blonde" are not actual phrases a competent author uses. How do some people get published, seriously...
Honestly this was pretty poorly written and super problematic, but it was just so much fun. Except at one point I think he changed a character's name in the middle of a paragraph which I'm still a little in shock over.
Good enough for what it is: a brainless pulp thriller. Of course, given that the back of the book describes it as "[a:Michael Crichton|5194|Michael Crichton|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1189723729p2/5194.jpg] meets [a:Clive Cussler|18411|Clive Cussler|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1225620641p2/18411.jpg]," I wasn't really expecting high literature.
This was a shockingly enjoyable book! I went in with such low expectations that I was immediately surprised by the level of writing this author presented. It's was a fast paced action novel that kept me engaged from beginning to end. A perfect read for summer and/or shark week. I will definitely be picking up the sequel!
Maybe 3.5, because while it had issues, it was very entertaining.

The Most Badass Shark Story Ever!
It was amazing! I loved listening to Stephan Lang read the audio book. He does a great job with the suspenseful scenes.
Why you need this book in your life
1) The human characters are great!
2) The death scenes are suspenseful and perfectly detailed.
3) T-Rex vs. Meg fight
4) Intense Surfers vs. Meg scene
5) Meg vs Meg scenes, yeah that's right, you don't deserve it so appreciate the hell out of it.
6) The way the Meg escapes the trench is absolutely metal
7) One of the best book climaxes i have ever read.
