I'd give this book a solid 4.5/5 stars! Even though it's a children's graphic memoir, the storytelling is beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. I wish that there weren't so many people who are in the situation that the author himself described in his memoir, yet at the same time, I am grateful for him voicing his experience. I don't think I'll read the book again because of how heavy it was, but I am glad that I picked it up.

A beautiful story. Yet another graphic novel that absolutely blew me away. This novel is a phenomenal representation of growing up in a refugee camp for a middle-grade audience. While heartbreaking at many, many points, When Stars are Scattered is ultimately a story about hope. Finding it, losing it, and finding it again, Omar and his brother Hassan are forced to live in a world that doesn’t treat them like humans. We are constantly told of their starvation and their suffering. It’s a perfect balance of presenting the truth of their situation and building up a beautiful love between the characters to present a found-family theme.

Type of read: Commuter (listened to and from work)

What made me pick it up: I saw this on my GoodReads timeline, reviewed by one of the authors I follow.

Overall rating: I am so happy I listened to this as an audiobook! It was less of a read and more of a performance. What a wonderful weaving storyline with characters that tugged at your heart. This was a fairly quick listen that I truly enjoyed. I would absolutely recommend When Stars Are Scattered for everyone's TBR list.
